ARAMINTA FREEDOM INITIATIVE
Freeing Maryland's Children from the Enslavement of Trafficking.
Araminta Freedom Initiative reduces the threat of child trafficking—the buying and selling of minors, typically for the purpose of forced labor or sexual exploitation—and restores the mind, body and spirit of those who have survived the trauma of modern enslavement.
Araminta Freedom Initiative (Araminta) develops and implements educational initiatives and local prevention plans with churches, schools and communities. Additionally, Araminta provides individualized, restorative services to victims of child trafficking using trauma-informed, evidenced-based models. Our Survivor Services Program includes providing care coordinators, long-term mentorship, advocacy and assistance in meeting daily needs. At Araminta, survivors and those youth vulnerable to trafficking are at the center of everything we do.
While we long to see every child free from human trafficking globally, Araminta’s focus is on ending domestic child sex trafficking here in the state of Maryland, where children are particularly vulnerable due to a host of geographic, economic and social issues.
One success story is Chrissy. She came to Araminta at the age of 18, a confirmed survivor of many years of sex trafficking. Quiet by nature, Chrissy was slow to get to know her mentor. Along with Chrissy’s mentor, Araminta has worked with her over the last year helping her stabilize her life. We supported her interest in nursing which led to enrollment in nursing assistant classes. Even through the pandemic crisis, Chrissy was able to stay on course and graduate from the nursing assistant program at the end of August 2020. Chrissy has successfully found a nursing assistant position. Araminta further helped by providing the uniforms and shoes required for her new position.

Thank you very much for the Uniforms and work shoes. I really needed them to use for work and they are so nice. I appreciate everything you all have done for me.
Araminta sponsors a “Fresh Start” event at the beginning of each school year. Amelia, aged 13, included a basket of Snickers and a teddy bear with her school supply list. Her mentor, Shenay, attended Fresh Start with her and celebrated the start of the new school year. Amelia didn’t expect her list would be completely filled, but was delighted that an anonymous donor provided both the teddy bear and a big basket of Snickers, along with her school supplies!
Additional successes are found through Araminta’s educational and prevention initiatives in the community. Araminta provides age-appropriate presentations at schools and churches, as well as education for clinicians, teachers and school administration. After these presentations, teachers regularly reach out for consultation and guidance regarding children who appear to be at risk of or are being trafficked.
Children in Maryland are susceptible to trafficking due to the intersection of a major seaport, international airports and interstate highways used to transport children, along with the concentration of gambling facilities, poverty and the lack of public awareness about trafficking.
Due to the impact of COVID-19 on the 2020-2021 school year, Araminta has been working with teens and educators establishing Youth Ambassador programs, particularly in Maryland’s highest-risk high schools. We have also launched A Cause for Conversation, a series of FaceBook live events to heighten awareness of online risks. Through education and expanded options, Maryland’s youth can experience a sense of belonging and a brighter future.
