Blacks In Government Region XI: The Student Oratorical/STEM Competition Must Go On – Youth Development

2020 BIG Region XI Oratorical/STEM Competition

In this moment of crisis with the corona-virus global pandemic, CFC-supported charity Blacks In Government (BIG) Region XI Council made sure the voices and talents were heard from some hard-working high school students in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The annual Youth Oratorical/STEM competition provides students the chance to develop speaking and presentation skills while demonstrating their knowledge and creativity. This is a program designed by the BIG National organization.

To make sure the organization quickly and effectively met the needs of the students who look forward to this annual competition to assist with their college and other school financial obligations, BIG Region XI had to change its platform to virtual. This was the first time in the history of the organization. The supporting BIG Region XI chapters quickly adapted to prepare the students for this competition.

Even though the proposed number of students were unable to participate, BIG Region XI Council was determined to support the remaining students and provide hope and support during these difficult times. The Oratorical topic was “How Can an Inclusive Immigration Policy Bring Unity to the United States of America?” and the STEM Theme was “Exploring Coding/Programming Opportunities”.

Without prevail, the below astute students demonstrated their gifts and talents in a virtual environment. During the program, a keynote speaker, oratorical/STEM mentors in the community and previous winners provided encouraging words of wisdom to these deserving students. The 1st place winners will move on to compete at the BIG National Oratorical/STEM competition level.

1st Place Oratorical – Elycia Woodham, BIG Pentagon Chapter
2nd Place Oratorical – Emerson Tiwang – BIG Veterans Affairs Headquarters Chapter
3rd Place Oratorical – Adjo Evonlah – BIG Carl T. Rowan State Department Chapter
1st Place STEM – Maya Gray – BIG National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Chapter

Without the support of your CFC gifts and volunteers, CFC-supported charity BIG Region XI Council would not have been able to provide the scholarships to these students without impacting its overall operating budget. As we continue to move forward with a purpose, BIG Region XI Council will persist to adapt to change while humbly being grateful for every dollar being provided through the CFC. We appreciate you and thank you for thinking BIG in support of our youth!
