Restoring Hope to a Keiki's Life

“You were always straight up with me… for a kid, you have been one of my biggest supports from Day 1. I am thankful for Kāhi and grateful for you.”
- From a letter written by a Kāhi Mōhala adolescent to her therapist

When our therapist showed me the letter, my eyes welled with tears. This young girl had experienced so much in her life that she no longer thought it was worth living.

That all changed when she came to Sutter Health Kāhi Mōhala, Hawaii’s only freestanding psychiatric hospital focusing on children and adolescents. Here, she met the therapist who helped her recover from mental illness and trauma to get her life back on track.

Many of the children and adolescents who come to Kāhi Mōhala from across the state cannot even imagine what that joy feels like.

In Hawaii every year, mental illness including depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts affects 1 out of every 5 people over the age of 13.

Now, on top of the hurt that many children and adolescents already know, many must cope with the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 in their families, in their communities and at school. More of Hawaii’s children and adolescents will need Kāhi Mōhala to navigate from debilitating mental illness to a healthier, happier future.

Through treatment at our beautiful campus, children and teens can blossom and grow. Sutter Health Kāhi Mōhala is the first in Hawaii to use the national-recognized Nurtured Heart Approach in treatment of our child and teen patients.

With your help, we can continue to extend our reach and ensure Hawaii’s children and adolescents with mental illness can get the help and hope that Kāhi Mōhala has to offer.
