*The video depicts how the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana is helping to “Make Lives Better” through its different programs and services offered statewide. The NKFL is the only major statewide voluntary non-profit health organization dedicated to preventing kidney disease, improving the health and well-being of individuals affected by this disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation. The NKFL provides vital patient and community services, conducts extensive public and professional education, advocates for patients through legislative action, and supports local kidney research to identify new treatments. Our programs and services include: emergency financial assistance to patients; “Safe Rides with Uber Health” for patients who need transportation to/from dialysis; research and training for physicians and other health professionals; virtual classroom curriculum, “Kidneys in the Classroom”, for children in 3rd – 6th grade; online resources for information about kidney disease and organ donation, and weekly posts on social media to engage the public and provide Q&A with healthcare professionals and the promotion of living organ donation. In Louisiana, there are over 460,000 citizens suffering from chronic kidney disease, over 16,000 on dialysis, and over 1,800 in need of a life-saving kidney transplant. Anyone, at any age, including children, can be affected by kidney disease. Did you know that kidney disease is more common than prostate and breast cancer combined? Currently, 37 million Americans have kidney disease, but 90% are unaware. *The video has “LIVELY MUSIC” as closed captioning. There are no speaking parts in this video.
